DOES MY DOG NEED A DOG COAT?

The cold season hits us like every year and many dog owners ask themselves the question: Does my dog need a coat? For us as a specialist shop, answering this question is practically everyday life in autumn and winter. However, let us say straight away: this question cannot be answered in general terms. As with many other things that concern dog and cat owners, the situation and the animal must be viewed individually. A general statement cannot therefore be made. Nevertheless, we want to approach the topic in this article and give one or two potentially helpful tips.

Let's start with the biological factors. There are dog breeds with multi-layered coats. The so-called undercoat warms the dog in the cold season. In pedigree dogs, the presence of undercoat is clear and can be found through brief research. With dogs from animal welfare, which can often no longer be assigned to specific breeds, the question of undercoat is sometimes a little more difficult, because long fur does not always automatically mean undercoat. An indication of an undercoat can be seasonal shedding, which occurs in spring and autumn. Observing a coat change can be an indicator as to whether there is an undercoat or not. The warming undercoat is shed at the beginning of the warm season and replaced by a thinner layer. This is replaced by the thicker undercoat in autumn as temperatures become increasingly cooler. The dog sheds significantly more during coat change, especially in spring, than in the seasons in between. In comparison, a dog without an undercoat always loses approximately the same amount of hair over the course of the year. The structure of the hair is also different. The undercoat is very fine and fluffy, whereas, for example, the coat of a short-haired dog without an undercoat tends to be thicker and stronger. Please note, however, that other factors, such as stress or changed living conditions, can also have an impact on the dog's fur loss. If you are unsure whether your dog has an undercoat or not, you can also ask your veterinarian about it.

So, after determining the presence of the undercoat, can I now say that if my dog has an undercoat, it automatically doesn't need a dog coat? Unfortunately, as already announced, it's not that easy. Individual factors such as how the dog gets used to temperatures sometimes play a major role. The amount of undercoat, and therefore also the dog's resistance to cold, adapts, admittedly gradually and with delay, to the dog's living conditions. If the dog spends a lot of time in the garden during the cold season, more undercoat usually forms and the dog gets along well without a coat. Dogs who only spend time outside in the cold for walks and are otherwise in heated rooms may feel cold on particularly cold days. Age can also have an influence on sensitivity to cold. Old dogs in particular, but also very young ones, tend to be more sensitive. So it's important to find out whether your dog is cold or not. To do this, the dog's behavior must be observed. For example, if the dog starts shaking on cold days and there is no other trigger for this shaking, then the situation is absolutely clear. This dog needs a coat. However, shaking is admittedly a very violent reaction to cold and even a dog that doesn't shiver like a leaf in the cold can still freeze. The signs of this are sometimes not obvious. The dog's behavior needs to be monitored more closely. Is the dog noticeably restless outside, dancing in place or pulling on the leash on cold days? This may be a sign that the dog is cold. However, the dog's behavior should be viewed in a differentiated manner and other factors that could also trigger the observed behavior, such as the current living conditions, should be taken into account. If, for example, a family member is traveling at the same time when it is getting colder, then missing the family member can also be the trigger for the behavior mentioned.

So if I have observed closely and noticed that my dog is cold, then do I definitely need a dog coat? Correct, basically it's that simple. There is still one thing that needs to be taken into account. Basically, dogs warm themselves through exercise. Even dogs without an undercoat can get through the winter without a coat. Especially with hunting dogs, often with short fur without an undercoat, who freeze when walking on a leash or staying in the cold at the Christmas market or at bus stops and need a coat, often do not need the coat when running freely. If the dog has the opportunity to warm itself through exercise and play, the coat could cause overheating, even on cold days. It is better to take off your dog's coat when actively playing with toys, balls or other dogs. This also has the pleasant side effect that the coat does not get dirty or damaged as quickly. Conversely, it may well be that a dog with an undercoat that doesn't spend any time outside except for walks will begin to freeze during the longer waiting times mentioned above while standing still and in very cold temperatures. Even if it is perhaps not generally necessary, it can be much more comfortable for the dog to wear a coat despite the presence of an undercoat. But here it is even more important to take off the coat when the dog is gettig active.

The situation is basically similar for coats with pure rain protection. Even if the coats are thin, they retain the dog's body heat and should be taken off during active play, especially in summer, despite the rain. Many conversations with our customers have shown that a surprising number of dogs downright hate rain. Long walks in bad weather are often impossible. For some of these dogs, unfortunately not all, a raincoat helps immensely. So if you have a dog that can't stand the rain at all, it might be worth trying out a raincoat. However, we cannot guarantee success.

You see, you can look at the topic of dog coats in a very differentiated way. The important point for us when it comes to the question of dog coats is that it is not important whether the dog generally needs a coat in the cold season or not, but rather to look at the specific situation and pay close attention to the needs of your own dog and to resolve the interaction between the dog's individual needs and the situation as best as possible.

If you now realize that you would like a coat for your dog, then you now have to find the right model and the right size. In our range we mainly offer coats from Cloud7. The cut fits well and with up to 12 sizes depending on the model, you can find the right coat for almost every dog. Some special cuts are also offered, such as for dachshunds or French bulldogs. While the coats obviously differ in style and look, there are also functional differences in the fabrics used. Some are more or less water-repellent or differ in their area of application. The temperature situation or robustness of the materials need to be looked at more closely here. For the coats that we offer online, you will find all the information including the size chart in the product description. If you are between sizes, we recommend choosing the larger number. The rear should also be well warmed and protected. If you need assistance with your selection, you can contact us by telephone during the service times stated in the footer or by email. We are happy to help! Ideally, you will have the opportunity to come to our store in Berlin with your dog and try on the different coats. Then you are sure to find the right coat for your beloved four-legged friend.

DOG HEALTH INSURANCE

This also includes visits to the veterinarian as part of our companions' lives. Especially when our animals are not feeling well, we want to provide them with the best possible care. This can quickly become expensive. However, a dog health insurance helps make these costs predictable.

The range of insurance options is extensive. The fear of experiencing additional stress due to complicated dealings with insurance companies in such a sensitive situation as the illness of a beloved pet is just as great. A good and reliable insurance policy only reveals itself in an emergency.

Therefore, we have decided to work with a partner who shares the same values that we live in our business practices. The Barmenia General Agency Bundes28 represents these values. THE HEALING POWER OF PLANTS

At SONNENBERG.BERLIN we are frequently asked what to feed apart from regular pet food. Animal lovers ask our advice on nutrion to complement a medical therapy, to support the healing process, relieve pain, or improve a pet's general well-being. We are neither a pharmacy nor do we provide medical advice - but experience has taught us that dietary adjustments and the administration of herbs, vitamins and oils can often achieve quite astonishing results. Do you know why your dog ingests feces from other animals, eats grass or suffers from reflux? What effects do elm bark, psyllium or calcium have on a pets' digestion? Which products help improve joint problems more successfully than green-lipped mussel? How does one prevent diet-related ear infections? Why do so many dogs and cats today develop intolerances or allergies? We offer our insight and experience about all these topics and inform you in this section about the best support.

TOP QUALITY PRODUCTS FROM SMALL MANUFACTURERS

We love craftsmanship and superior materials. High quality products do not age, they mature over time and gain character with their very individual patina. This attention to detail is not only found in the leather items from the SONNENBERG.BERLIN workshop, but also in many other small manufacturers from all over Europe that we represent. We always endeavor to discover small, committed manufacturers, and are often their exclusive representatives. Together we develop new products and often accompany and cooperate with our suppliers over many years. In future we will inform you about these small manufacturers here, introduce their founders and share their individual qualities and developments with you. Stay tuned...
