Frequently asked questions about MANUFACTORY
Where and how are the collars and leashes of SONNENBERG MANUFACTORY made?
The collars and leashes of SONNENBERG MANUFACTORY are designed in Berlin and handcrafted in Spain by a traditional harness saddler. They are made of vegetable-tanned full leather with metal parts of solid brass or stainless steel. The collars are made in the English style and lined with a soft leather lining. Every piece is handcrafted and therefore unique.
What does vegetable-tanned leather mean, and is it well tolerated by dogs?
Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned in a plant-based way. No chromium is used in the tanning process, so the leather is produced naturally. As a result, it has a very low allergy potential, and skin irritation is not to be expected in our experience. The outer leather comes from cattle or buffalo. All collars are additionally lined with a soft leather lining, which makes them comfortable to wear.
How does the configurator work, and what can I choose?
With the configurator, you design your own set of collar and leash in addition to our classics. You choose the outer leather made of vegetable-tanned cowhide or buffalo leather, the softer lining leather and the color of the stitching, each according to your taste. Metal parts made of brass or stainless steel are added, and you determine the measurements yourself. For the collar alone, this results in several hundred variants. Each piece is made individually for you, which usually takes 3 to 4 weeks. Because the goods are made to your specifications, returns and withdrawal are excluded. You can find details in our terms and conditions.
Which collar size fits my dog, and how do I measure correctly?
Measure the neck circumference where the collar will sit later, and do not apply the measuring tape too tightly. As a rule of thumb, two fingers should still fit comfortably between the neck and the collar. Then compare the value with the size chart on the product page. The sizes range from XXS for neck circumferences of 17 to 24 cm to XXL for 45 to 53 cm. Because the collars are handmade, deviations of a few millimeters are possible. If your value lies at the lower or upper limit of a size, please choose the neighboring size in which your value lies better in the middle. If you are unsure or have special requests, we are happy to advise you by email or phone.
How do I care for leather collars and leashes, and why are they stiff at first?
New collars and leashes made of vegetable-tanned leather are still somewhat stiff at first. After a short time, they become softer and develop a unique patina. To keep the leather supple for a long time and prevent it from becoming brittle, we recommend regular care. Apply the Brillant Leather Creme and the Brillant Leather Oil by Bense & Eicke thinly with a cloth. For cleaning, the Glycerin Leather & Saddle Soap is suitable; work it into a lather on a damp cloth or sponge. The Brillant Leather Care Cloth is rubbed in evenly and can help protect the leather from moisture. The care products are intended for smooth leather and are not suitable for suede, velour and nubuck.
